Holiday
in is the product of six three-month residencies in three venues;
2 in London, 2 in Marseilles and 2 in Vilnius. Each of the three
venues hosted artists from the two other towns. The six artists
were asked to spend the time reflecting and negotiating around
the idea of being on holiday; of the form of the residency; of
production in a new context. On returning home, each artist was
asked to conceive work for a group exhibition at each of the
three host venues. At Gasworks the artists present reflections
on the residency. A mixed bag of a show, highlights the geographical
and logistical difficulties of the project as well as the spectrum
of possibilities that such a premise might offer; the best bits
being Lithuanian artist Darius Miksys' decision to stop being
an artist for three months in London and to learn how to play
cricket, French artist Nicolas Simarik's astro-turf shadow throughout
the gallery and London-based Flavia Müller Medeiros' project
around in a Belarusian university which relocated to Vilnius
after its forced closure by the Belarusian government in 2005.
